Artist’s Statement
Formerly a software engineer, I now work as a freelance wildlife artist and a graphic artist for Edison Gauss, an app company. I produce digital art, animation, and film using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Blender, and Flash Pro. I work in acrylic and watercolor on traditional surfaces and wood panels sculpted in joint compound.
I have always been drawn to natural science. When I was small and my Father caught a fish, he couldn’t simply clean it, I wanted a biology lesson with a dissection and discussion of the mysterious internal workings. I approach an art project like an experiment. The object is not just to finish a piece, but to learn from each step. I like to take advantage of the properties of paints, mediums and grounds to make them do the work for me. I am drawn to the depth and complex color that comes from many transparent layers of paint.
I paint places I want to be, and moods I want to be in. Painting is a way to share the way I experience the world, as a deeply connected place. In my mind, I wander around inside the painting, find a nice place to sit and watch the action. A piece is successful for me if I want to hang out in it.
Most of the animals I paint are specific individuals I have met on road trips to the National Parks and wildlife refuges, the Oregon Zoo, or my back yard. I spend time watching, sketching, and photographing subjects. My goal is to catch the feeling of two-way contact, and the emotion I felt when I observed the animal.
